Problem with a prototype(line twist)

Post by Guest »

I've got this reel that father designed back in the 1970s. It was prototyped at Zebco in two versions, spinning and spin-cast. I have the spinner. It was never produced because of a problem with line twist. I read the test report and it would break the line about every ten casts. Line has improved since then and I was wondering what kind of line to try. Which brand resists line twist best? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! I don't know if this matters, but the reel is the size of a Langley 870 (large).

Thank you in advance for your help.

Regards,
Clinton

If your reel is a prototype, I would not recommend you put any line on it, or fish with it. Doing so could severely reduce the value.

Modern braided line can severely damage earlier tackle. It acts just like a band-saw on it.

Hmmmm. I guess I should take the line off of those R.D. Hull prototypes then. The reel that father designed has never been wet. I did take the large diameter line off of it, but it looks like the original Stren was left on as packing. I need to fix the line twist problem. If I can then father may yet be able to get a patent on the radical gearing system. In any case the reel will never be used to fish. By the way, has anyone ever seen a two speed spinning reel with a counter-rotating spool?
