Live wells, etc.

Post by Steve »

Does anyone know if live wells or bait buckets with mechanical aeration devices--motorized or whatever--were in use before, say, 1940 or so? I ran across a 1926 bait bucket with a hand pump on the side for aeration, but I wondered how long it took before someone started using motors for these things.

:D 8) :!:   :type: Steve, I am looking at 2 devises I found at a closed tackle shop in Huron Ohio these are a air hose with a conection to put it on the spare tire and the other end has a adj. valve with a screwdriver slot with a rubber washer, dirs. and name is (wonder aerator pat. applied for. Guaranteed to keep minnows alive longer and also makes them more active. Replenishes the oxygen in the water Simple to use and ready in a instant shows a older car about a 1935 ford with the lift up trunck, and item attached to the spare tire and hose going into the bucket. Dirs. on other side need about 30 to 35 lbs air and the presure in the tire will only drop 5lbs in 2-3 hrs, and goes on to say if a long trip is contemplated it would be wise to stop every 3to4 hrs and have the air suply inthe tire replenished so that you still have the protection of a spare tire. Made by WONDER PRODUCTS CO. 1674 King Avenue Columbus 8, OHIO price? a whole .15cents. I have 2 of them new! Col. Milton Lorens aka SWIM JIG your Ohio conection

Thanks, Milt. What a cute idea. Think how far someone could go if he remembered to carry a spare spare tire (in the trunk; not something hanging over a belt buckle).

:D 8)  :type: Steve, while looking in my great tackle advertisment book, I saw this one on page 42 , a 1911 ad, (The Jones Aquarium Minnow Pail, 2 sizes, a no 200 for $2.75 a 8 quart and a 300 a 12 quart at $3.00 made by ( The Deshler Mail Box Co. Deshler Ohio dir. say its fited with tank above the water that has a valve that one hooks a ordinary Bicycle pump to, the tank lets air bubles into the waterfor 6hrs. also has a towing ring, must have towed it behind the boat? after all most were rowed in those early years. size on the 200 was 8in by 8in by 15 in and the 300 was 6in x10 in by 15 in. has a minnow trap and a air tank that can be refiled in 2 min. will keep minows alive indefently as long as air supply is maintained. ( minnows of those days must have been a hardy bunch, my live well with air on the boat wont keep emeral shiners alive over 4 hrs) anyway if I see anymore of these will advise, never looked for them! Hey that book Great tackle ADV. is full of good imfo! Your Ohio Conection Col. m. Lorens aka SWIM JIG

Milt, an ideal system would have combined the Wonder gadget and the Jones doohickey. You bubble air through the bucket with a spare tire, then refill the tire with the bicycle pump. :loco:
