What can you tell me about this reel. I just picked it up at a flea market. It is about 4 inches in diameter, with bakelite sides (dark brown) with a wooden handle. On the reel seat it says:
"Olympic"
250 yds
Ocean City Manufacturing Co
Philadelphia
Ocean City "Olympic"
What's up????????????
Did I just not get the official club handshake or something? Did I forget to take a shower?
All I asked was a simple question about information about a reel and it was ignored...
Really not trying to be
, but ...
I've been on this site before...about a year ago...and it wasn't like this...
What's up?

Olympic?
Hi Archer,
Sometimes this board gets a lot of these appraisal/info requests while we're all caught up in talking about reels we collect. A quick look thru Lawson's Guide doesn't turn up any Ocean City Olympics nor does a scan of ebay auctions. From the looks of your reel, it's design (not their earliest - maybe late 1930s to 1940s), materials and condition tell me it's a pretty low end one. I'm thinking 5-10 bucks. If Ocean City made only a couple of thousand of these for some outlet like Sears, maybe a hard core Ocean City Collector might pay a hair more.

o.c. reel
brian is right on and maybe even a little generous here in mich cant give those big reels away remember everything is relative to me anything over 100yds is big and to harvey that would be a perch reel[except those ocean perch have teeth i seen them]
Thank you for the replies! I have tried to find out what I could about the reel, but was not having any luck. I did the normal E-bay look, web searches, etc, but was coming up empty. I used to come on the site quite regularly about a year ago, but when several days went by with almost 60 looks, but without a reply to my request, i guess I got a little cranky. Sorry!
Is there any other method I can try to find out more about the reel? I'm not worried about the value, I just thought it was an interesting looking reel and would like some more info about it...i.e. year made, what specifically it was intended for, etc.
Thanks again
Jim

Jim: Your Ocean City Olympic reel is shown in my 1939 Catalog. It is not present in my 1941 catalog, nor my 1936 catalog. The listing says very little, other than there are two sizes: #151 (250 yds) and #152 (300 yds). They sold for $2.50 & $2.75 respectively. The reel looks to be very similar to the OC Seal Beach and St. Lucie reels, and was probably dropped to reduce the number of reels that were very similar in construction and function. It is probably scarce due to limited production, and as Brian stated, probably mainly of interest to an Ocean City completist.
