Malleson?

Was this most likely a Malleson reel related to patent 284,217? I forgot to increase my snipe bid and the tiny little bugger got away.

Good question. I thought the reel looked too early for Malleson, the style being more like reels the Conroys sold in preceding decades (and assuming the crank's a replacement). Malleson's "Patent Perfection" was made in several different styles, but not till the mid-'80s. The ones I've seen don't look quite like the patent drawings, e.g., the ones with headplate rims have raised pillars. They've had patent markings and those cute arrowhead click levers. The ebay reel has no sign of a tailplate spool bearing. I wouldn't rule out the Malleson patent possibility, but I think the odds are pretty slim.

If it'll help, I post a picture of the innards when I get it.

I'd never seen the combination of a raised back and a protective rim before.

Thanks for the replies, glad it ended up where it did. The closest thing I found in research was marked "Conroys Makers N.Y." It wasn't exactly like this one.

Well, it has a raised back and a #5 on the foot ...both are NY features.

So, who done it?

Dean, here's my two-cents'-worth of useless information:
1. I have some pics of an Onion & Cornwall reel with a click like that. Find some O&C invoices showing where they bought their reels and...Bingo!
2. I have some old pics of another GS reel that looks pretty much like the one you're showing here, but without the headplate rim. It has the same click and, of course, an original crank. Maybe you could contact the guy who sent the pics: Dean Smith.
(P.S. Noticed this is my 1500th contribution to Reel Talk. Just want to continue our tradition of info-free posts.)
