$5 GARAGE SALE FIND THAT RAISED SOME QUESTIONS

Post by m3040c »

The reel is Pflueger Templar 300 yard model. It was found at a garage sale for $5.00. Sort of a no brainer, you can't loose buy but a clean and polish was required.

Image
Sand, oil stains and corrosion but no damage or cracks. Wondering if those two holes drilled in the stand belong there?

Image
Removal of the bridge seemed to be impossible. There are two screws that can be removed from the outside of the head plate but the third fastener seems to be buried under the free spool lever which is not removable. Did Pflueger build this reel in a way that made it impossible to break down :?:

Image
Here the head plate can be seen with the two bridge screws removed. There is a small common slot screw installed into the anti-reverse pin but removing that does nothing to help with removal of the bridge. This restoration was completed without removing the parts in question and came out fine but the question still exists.
I know that with some old reels, the replacement parts were sold in assemblies rather than individual parts. I wonder if this if the case with the old Templars. Possibly the entire head plate with bridge was sold for a replace or repair situation? Does anyone know what I am missing or if I am missing something?

This restoration represents 8 solid hours of polishing.

This is not my reel nor did I restore it, a friend of mine did the work and asked me the questions I presented here. Unfortunately I could not answer them, hopefully the answers are in this forum.

Reel wasn't sold with holes in the foot.

Never tried to take apart the bridge but a slightly different version of the anti-reverse pin was sold as an aftermarket part. The whole assembly screwed on so the factory version on this reel might do the same. But even if you do get the anti-reverse off, that still might not do it because it looks like there are a couple more pins above the screws.

Hello Brian,

I remember that aftermarket part. I think Pflueger sold it for a long time after they stopped putting on their own reels. It was a very cool item. Here it is on a Penn 209::

Image
This after market piece is easy to take down. The pin that you use to place the gizmo into or out of engagement of the anti-reverse, threads out of the striker and allows you to remove the striker piston. No such luck on the old Templar.

I suspect the installation of the external anti-reverse on the old Templar eliminates the access to the screw that you need to acces in order to remove the bridge. Maybe, possibly---------------> :?

Thanks for your input Brian :)

Mike...why would someone put the AR apparatus on a Penn 209? possibly some masochist that removed the anti-reverse dog so he could beat his knuckles senseless?

Nice clean-up on that reel, BTW...proves you can bring back a quality piece from near death to show room shape with a bit of effort...nice save!

The save on the 300 yard Templar credits go to Mr. Ed Miller. A person whose personal standards are very high and is not afraid to do the work to accomplish them.

The 209 is mine. I sort of felt the same way you do when I bought this reel but then I thought about it a bit. A Penn 209 has a standard, internal anti-reverse dog, it is always engaged. This reel has the dog removed, so it became a knuckle buster. With addition of the Pflueger external anti-reverse, the 209 now becomes a sweet 209 with a Convertible Anti-Reverse. The Pflueger add on gives the reel the ability to have a controlled release of the line with the handle while trolling by simply pushing the little lever to the disengaged flat, a feature some people like. Someone must have loved his 209 and wanted that feature on this particular reel. This is the only one I have ever seen done this way. :o

Mike...sometimes forensics are the only way to verify...
(RIP Little Alpine). The flanged bushing on the inside of the headplate is pressed and then "pinned" to the outside assembly. Not meant to be taken apart at all.

Rick,

That is a great "Show & Tell" and will save a lot of frustration. From your R.I.P comment the little Pflueger was a sacrafice and will not be reassembled...way to go...KILLER  It is a disappointment to find something that you would expect to be able to take apart without wrecking it.

Mike & Ray...Thanks. Ray's right...the original question Mike posed, motivated me to find out just how Pflueger put those together. I pondered it for a couple of days and wore out two magnifying glasses trying to find the magic button. In the end...the Pflueger Alpine had to die.

If anyone is tempted to take one apart...I wouldn't!

LOL...I'll bet ya cried when the last Volkswagon Beetle rolled off the assy line to? It's ooookay Mike. Even though the Alpine is now lost forever...it had a Donor card. I'll use it's parts and create something GOOD...like a Frankenreel. Holler if ya need anything, a knob, nut, lever, bushing...whatever.

Let me know when you release the new and improved Pflueger Frankenreel Friday the 13th Model.

We can do a ORCA Benefit auction. I will be the first bidder.

I know you mentioned (RIP Little Alpine) but it went right over my head. I thought you meant RIP (Restoration In Progress)---->
