Shakespeare Marquette Beater – Really

Post by Len Sawisch »

So after 20+ years of collecting, I finally have a nice example of the pre-1910 Marquette. OK, it’s actually only nice compared to the beater Marquette I am now willing to pass back to the collector community (see the pics for comparisons).
Here is the redeeming features list:
1. Reel is unmarked
2. Handle is probably not correct
3. Handle nut is too new for a pre-1910
4. Hard rubber head spacer is missing a chunk
5. Rear plate outer ring is not flat
6. Screw slots are well-used
7. Nickeled finish is speckled
Despite this, the click is strong, the drag works OK, and the reel actually spins pretty well.

Anticipating there are other Shakespeare collectors who have never had a shot at an early Marquette, I am taking offers on this one . . .

By the way, here is how Shakespeare hyped the Marquette #1463 in the 1907 catalog
“The Marquette is one of the handsomest reels made, and the rich harmony of the brilliant jet and burnished nickel gives a beauty of finish which is exceedingly captivating.
- The design, and pleasing combination of parts, gives an apparent as well as an actual lightness to the reel.
- The Marquette is made from choice selected metals, and jet vulcanized pure hard rubber.
- Journals are made from English stubbs steel of finest quality, hand fitted running in tempered bronze bearings.
- Pinion is hand cut tempered tool steel, working with tempered brass driving gear.
- The design of head and tail pieces is new and extremely pleasing.
- A solid block of vulcanized jet rubber is turned down, leaving a raised pan with handsome champferred edge.
- The block is then reinforced with the best hard drawn nickeled binding rings, with edges slightly projecting and forming protection to the rubber blocks.
- Fitted with milled spool caps on head and tail pieces.
- Swaged crank handle, accurately counter-balanced, with fluted iveroid grip.
- Swaged rod plate with wide bearing bottom pillars.
- Strong locking pillars with reinforced ends.
- New Shakespeare Harmonic Click, with cut steel hand finished ratchet and click pawl, operated by sliding button on tail plate.
- Shakespeare adjustable graduated drag, operated by sliding button on tail plate.
The Marquette reel is beautifully finished. The rubber is a brilliant jet black, nickel parts are highly hand burnished.
Made in one size only (80 yds); quadruple multiplying, takedown frame.
$5.00 - For agate jeweled spool caps, add $1.00”
