Kester/Hoover LW Mechanism, not often seen...

Post by John Savu »

I thought it would be interesting to some of you. This Ohio made mechanism, is not often seen. Thanks to Steve Vernon for his help with the pic! If it does not show up, it is my fault.

How about this one John? Not as rare but neat in it's own way. I put it on a pole with a Penn surf reel and tried ir out on the pier. Works great except the spool on my reel was a little wider than the travel of the alignment wheel. Enjoy,

Now I understand the diffrent between "Automatic" and "Semi- Automatic"

That is really nice Harvey, I bet you said a couple "expletive deleteds", when you used it, I would have. Of course my favorite add on is the Redifor/Flegel spooler. I have never seen a box, and I am not sure how they were marketed. Did Shakespeare ever market a LW mechanism? I know they had the Huffman Saddle, patented in nearby Youngstown, Ohio, but I have never stumbled on any other casting device from them, that I can remember. Thanks for the reply Harvey, and best wishes to you!

Truthfully John, It works quite well. I have also tried it on a Pflueger Golden West #1878 trolling reel out in the yard and it is just fine. I threw about a 3 oz. sinker out and then reeled it back in. It does spread the line evenly across the spool. Here are the instructions that was in the box.

Phil, the mechanism mounts between the reel and the rod,if I remember correctly. I recently sent the mechanism to a friend and I donot have the paperwork in front of me. As you reel in, you move the mechanism back and forth with your finger. Not a complicated device! I will try to get a copy of the papers.

:D 8) :!:   :type: Ok so I see one! page 59 Of Great Tackle ADVS, by Larry Smith, It shows the item coming from front to rear of reel, under the bottom pilers, round part attaches to the rod handle the movable part goes thru and under the spool and is moved back and forth, (it does not retard the line and takes the place of a automatic reel at a very small cost (it was real expensiive! ha ha )(if your dealer does not handle our line guide , we will send same post paid up on receipt of .35cents, agents wanted Kester -Hover MFG co. Toledo Ohio that was in 1913 ! ok phil thats how it works Your Ohio Conectio Col. milton Lorens in the (decided ) state aka SWIM JIG
