Since there are now 287... or is it 288?, bowl games this year, I have a great idea for next year. THE ORCA BOWL! Of course it would be played in Akron, Ohio...but the site is negotiable. Eligibility requirements follow...
Winning record required. Why reward a team with a bowl if they lose as many games as they win?
Team must not have had any sanctions for at least ten prior years
All eligible players must have attended at least one session of each course in the current academic year
All eligible players must have at least a 1.0 GPA
No player eligible if, during an interview, he has used the expression You know? more than ten times within three minutes
No team is eligible if any player has an arrest record
So far no school meets the requirements. However, with such a prestigious
sponsor, I would expect a great effort by some schools to support their coach and try to qualify.
Suggestions open for the name of the bowl.
Cost of sponsorship to be born by ORCA to be paid out of dues. But think of the new members we would get!
Contact Bad Bob for further details
Great idea!

Hey BB. We should name it THE REEL NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP BOWL. We could make millions. Like the other major bowls we could charge the participating schools for 17,500 tickets and charge their bands $500 per seat they occupy. It's going to cost LSU and Alabama $1,000,000 for the two bands to attend the bowl the BCS calls the "National Championship".
I'll have to admit that Boise State failed to qualify for the ORCA BOWL due to your 2nd rule. However, I would apply for a waver, due to NCAA bias. BSU was sanctioned because a couple of freshmen came to school early to get in shape and some of their team mates allowed them to sleep on couches in their rooms. Sleeping on someone's couch is a perk that is not allowed by the NCAA. The absurdity of this ruling was even discussed on several national sports broadcasts.
Then they ruled a couple of kids from Holland ineligible for some games while they investigated why these Dutch kids were in Boise. The answer could have been found in 24 hours (they came to Boise as exchange students, and never played football until they got here) but the NCAA took half the season to determine this.
Since I'm aware of your academic requirements, I should mention that Boise State football players tied Miami Ohio for football academic graduation rate of 100%:

Kellen Moore finished his bachelors degree last year and will complete his Masters Degree work this year.

Sorry Geez, but BSU wouldn't make it anyhow if you threw out that bit about the sleep in. According to Sports Illustrated they were the fourth worst team in the country with number of players with priors...16 as I recall, but you can check it out. But there is nothing like a winning program to provide Redeeming Grace, how sweet sound!
Vanderbilt wouldnt qualify for several reasons, not the least of which was a second teamer who broke into some guys dorm room while waving a pistol. Don't know what became of that.

Hey Bob, You're just as bad as the NCAA, even though I'll admit that an arrest is an arrest. Haven't you ever got a traffic ticket? Also this is last year's news. Further investigation showed:
I'm not sure about that battery arrest, but the others seem to be normal college activities. In the article Sports Illustrated states that Boise State players on the 2010 team were charged with 16 criminal offenses over the past five years. Of those charges, three have been dismissed, six were traffic related, five were alcohol related, one was for trespassing and one was for battery.
Hey, I'm just quoting SI, not passing judgement. Just saying no team I can think of would have qualified for the ORCA Bowl. We obviously need to soften the requirements. Maybe any team with at least eleven players who like to fish!
PS What league is BSU in now? Seems like someone said it requires them to make several three thousand mile round trips each season.

The Big East. There will probably be some of those long distance trips, but the Big East as of 2012 will have eastern and western divisions. That makes lots of sense, doesn't it. A couple of Texas schools, California, etc. Nothing like a Western Big East.PS What league is BSU in now?
