Meaningful poetry
Meaningful poetry
The subject of a poem by Robert Service, entitled The Spell of the Yukon, published in 1916, is much more about enchantment with the journey and the beauty of the region than about gaining gold. Here are a few lines from it I wanted to share that seem to be appropriate in our search for that elusive, ultimate reel, the journey and the mystique of the angler's environment much more valuable than the find:
"There's gold, and its haunting and
haunting;
Its luring me on as of old;
Yet it isn't the gold that I'm wanting
So much as just finding the gold.
Its the great, big, broad land way up
yonder,
Its the forests where silence has lease;
Its the beauty that thrills me with
wonder,
Its the stillness that fills me with peace."
Meaningful thoughts! Bad Bob

Re: Meaningful poetry
Nice note, BB! Hey, we ought to bring back the Poetry Wars we had going a few years ago...er...well..alot of it was closer to limericks...but great fun. The fly rod board has a Haiku contest going...seems we should do similar.

For the life of me,
I am truly confounded.
What is a haiku?

(it's early...make allowances
)
If Bronson had wooed Johnson
Instead of Joseph Coxe,
O’ Rourke might have a lot more Green
In his collection stocks
(Back by unpopular Demand:)
O-City's reels were of high quality,
But pricey, with poundage galore.
They coulda done
With a bit less Achtung,
And an ounce or two more of l'amour.

Please consider not being too keen--Limericks PLEASE!
To ban writers of Haiku, I mean.
Most of them, they admit,
Stop the poems they have writ,
Till they learn to count past seventeen.

Expand your mind! Increase its radius!
But, alas, writing poems is so tedious.
A jotter of Haiku
Is much like a tyke who
Gets sidetracked too soon by his ADS.

A clever poet named Steve
Had acerbic lines up his sleeve.
These he retrieved on demand
When galoots called his hand,
That anapestic rhymer named Steve!

Haiku, schmaiku
Bring on rhyme
Throw in some reels
But be sublime...
About it...

Re: Meaningful poetry
You just had to go there, huh John?
There once was a man who collected reels
He searched and dickered and made many deals.
T'was but an impulse in the beginning,
then the wife turned and a buy became sinning.
He had control whence he first started
but the reels gained numbers and were often carted,
Off to Shows and Trade Rooms to show off their glitter
and parting became difficult and selling 'em bitter.
Still the numbers grew, regardless of some parting
and the many left, were far from disheartening.
That collector he weakened, he lost control,
the reels took over and filled every wall.
Eventually he and the house were enveloped,
the garage, the basement all were developed
Like a fine quarter-acre, those reels grew,
And he pondered one day..."Who-da Knew?!"
All can ask, what reels to capture...eventually
the question becomes..."who is the master?"

Haiku with a twist:
The answer to the
reel-eschewing spouse: Keep them
Elsewhere than the house

Re: Meaningful poetry
I avoided Facebook for years, now that I'm on it, I don't understand it. I guess you have to be an intellectual reel collector to understand all of this stuff. I guess I'm not and guess I don't. Oh, well.
Re: Meaningful poetry
Jonathan...Its best, when reading this kind of stuff, like me to not think. It is generally meaningless, being the ramblings of mostly old minds weary at times of reading posts about Zebcos and Ocean City's etc. on the Reels Site. Stay tuned for more entertaining gibberish!
