Driving to Juneau AK
Driving to Juneau AK
As best I can tell, Juneau AK is the only capitol in the world you can't drive to from anywhere. In fact, unless you are nearly superhuman, you can't walk to it from anywhere. An acquaintance from my youthful days, an accomplished mountain climber, and a friend were, to the best of their knowledge, the first two humans to get to Juneau on foot back in the 60s, doing so by crossing the vast ice field from British Columbia after many days of dangerous treking.
Anyone is welcome to refute all of this since, as usual, I am probably wrong.
Bad (trying unsuccessfully to somehow tie this into reel collecting) Bob

Bad Bob,
I'll help you tie this in. Did they stop to do some Ice Fishing?

If you consider that the capitol of the State of Hawaii is the City and County of Honolulu which in turn is the entire island of Oahu, then there would be two.
Re: Driving to Juneau AK
Not totaly true, you can drive from Douglas to Juneau.RAM wrote:As best I can tell, Juneau AK is the only capitol in the world you can't drive to from anywhere
Alaskans often talk often talk about driving to places like Juneau or Cordova on the Alaska Marine Highway as if the ferry is just an extension of the road. Bill Brown is our ORCA rep in that area.
Re: Driving to Juneau AK
Brian: Checked into the Oahu thing before. Didn't know Honolulu included the whole island, but knew there were towns on the other side of the island you could drive from.
Jason: Can you see Douglas from Juneau? Didn't check a detailed map, so I'm wrong I suppose. Still, considering AK is by far the biggest state, it seems that location is the dumbest place for a Capitol they could find-with the exception of Barrow-or Attu.
Of course, no reflections on any dear friends currently living in AK.
Thought of how to tie this into something meaningful: The guys who crossed the ice field were reeling when they got to Juneau!
Cheers for trivia! BB

Re: Driving to Juneau AK
Apparently I was wrong. According to wikipedia- Douglas no longer exists.
"In a controversial moment in 1970 the cities of Douglas and Juneau together became the City and Borough of Juneau."

Moscow - The home of the University of Idaho.
Re: Driving to Juneau AK
Moscow, TN can probably be seen from a high building in Memphis.
Area: 1 1/2 square miles; population 422. Home of Moscow Elementary School. Cannot see Juneau from either Memphis or Moscow.

Moscow, TX is a small community of 170 souls in Polk Co. not too far from Woodville, although I can't see it from my backyard. It is the western terminus of the Moscow, Camden & San Augustine Railroad, a seven mile-long railroad built in the 1800s to carry lumber from a sawmill in Camden to a larger connecting carrier's route in Moscow. Now you know.
