Midge Reel

Post by Brian F. »

What is a "midge reel" and is there a particular reason why a fly reel would be named that? I know the midge is a bug/fly but if someone could help me understand a little background on it I'd be greatful!

I'd say it's to define the smallest fly reel of a useable size. Light tackle - light rod, reel, light line, small flies.
(the kind of reel you wouldn't use on that jack  ; although I did catch a 4-lb. smallmouth on one and wanted a gaff )
