old wooden reel

Post by Bob White 77 »

Can anybody help me with an evaluation.
I have an old wooden reel which I can remember my father using more than 50years ago. It is 6 inches in dia. and has the word SUN stamped on one of the four cross arms which is screwed to the back. It has a patent No. which I think reads 18388/85. The ratchet activating mechanism is missing but I would consider the rest of the reel to be in "fair" and original condition. It still has the cord type fishing line on it. I have a collector coming to look at the reel next Thursday with a view to buying. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Many thanks
Sincerely

Eaton Sun Reel

Hi there your reel was made by Rueben Heaton in Birmingham. The patent for 1895 was never sealed so it is not listed anywhere. They sell from $50 to $500 in that size depending on the exacy configuration of the reel.

Again, the reel is known as an Eaton Sun.

Many thanks. I sold it to the collector for A$60. I hope I did the right thing.

Thanks again
