I'm sure you are looking at this Malloch and wondering what the unusual feature is ...silent wind. This reel has the ability to be adjusted so the click only works in one direction ...and that direction is reversible by flipping the gear over. Very cool.

In one direction the gear will hit the pawl, stop and click, as with any other reel. In the other direction the gear will spin and there is no click. Here is a video illustrating this feature ...

When the little "stop" engages (see picture), the reel clicks ...but turn it in the other direction and the stop cannot engage. Brilliant.

A discussion of Mallochs can be read here:

The reel is 3.5" in diameter, the spool is .75" wide and everything is working just as it should. The only issues are the foot has been neatly tapered and there are a few marks on the bottom of the frame where the file likely hit the frame. Other than this, the reel retains nearly all its finish, runs smooth and is tight as a drum.

The reel is currently set up for silent wind when wound with the right hand. I can change this if you would like ...but you'd probably want to inspect this very cool feature for yourself. Its quite ingenious.

A very scarce reel.

Interesting! And if you ever lost that little piece I bet you could find a woodruf key to replace it with.
