The Morrison Super Fine Reel

Post by robert ellis »

I won this on the Bay a few days back, in a Lot of 6 ! For once I got a good deal, well it has been a while anyway ! I would consider this an Odd-Ball ! made of aluminum through out ! I have never seen one before, most likely made postwar, when there was an abundance of scrap aluminum, due to all the US Military scrapping out war planes, and what not ! did a search on ORCA, and found this old link below, now this reel says The Morrison Super Fine Reel, Horrocks-Ibottson, Utica, NY, and in this old post, it says it was made by the Madison Kipp Co. Madison, Wisconsin ! I know H+I had reels made by other companies, ( trade reels ! ) so there was a few made anyway, not as the old post suggests ! ( and no pics in the old post either ! ) notice the spool with a blemish, an air pocket in the cast ! like the crank knobs, and the casting of the crank handle ! just thought I would share ! and wonder if anyone else has one ! and any more info ? Kind of a "neet" old reel !

Horrocks-Ibbotson loved to buy companies that were failing and then assemble products from the stock of parts and maybe even produce the rods, reels, or whatever under their own name for a while. I'm fairly certain that's what happened here. As Harvey's answer stated in the old thread, the reel was originally manufactured by the Madison Kipp Co. Madison, Wisconsin. The reel was too expensive for them to produce so they undoubtedly sold the design and patents (if any) and all parts to H-I. I'd guess H-I assembled some reels and also found them too expensive to manufacture. Thus the reel is scarce, under either name.
