2 reels for one price. First is a Shakespeare Leader (on the left) with a simple one-button click drag that works fine. Everything intact. Reel on the right is marked The Pennell Trade Mark on the faceplace. Has buttons on front and back and it cranks OK but the click isn't working. Anyone who wants to take it apart can problem fix it. It's stamped 751 under the foot, which means a) it was the 751st reel made; b) it is model 751; c) it was made at 7:51 a.m. (or p.m.); of d) none of the above. I suspect it's D and I have no clue what the 751 is for.
Sold, pending payment. Thanks, Dale!

Richard - wrong on all three guesses. The reel is a Montague and they used such numbers on their pre-1910 reels. The 750 series in the 1904 catalog does not have a 751 shown but there are other reels shown that could be the same as your model. they also used an alphabetical - numerical system at that time so maybe they were converting from one system to another in the 1904 catalog. It's in very nice condition for a reel so old.
Thanks, Don. I knew it was made by Montague and should have included that. Didn't know the additional information you supplied, though. I kind of liked my suggestion that the 751 was the time of day it was made.
Because of the huge interest, the hundreds of inquiries I've received about these two reels and the amazing buzz this posting has created in the blogosphere, the price is now just $25 for the pair, shipped within the US.
