south bend 550a

Post by fishohio »

I just recieved a south bend 550a reel from a family friend, and was wondering if anyone could tell me details about this reel. Also, if anyone knows stuff about rods, it came with a 4'8" Hoe and Fork rod. The pat no is 80990. If anyone could tell me anything about either of these two items, I would greatly appretiate it.

Thanx,
Mark

SOUTH BEND 550 reel and FORK&HOE steel rod

Post by SWIM JIG »

:D 8) :!: :?:    Mark, you units money wise are not expensive, The Fork & HOE steel rod made in geneva ohio if decent no bad line guide eyes, good finish etc and if a cork handle in my area sell around $4.50 to strong like new condition $20.00, yes we still use them for pearch fishing as they telegraph the lightest bite to your hand. The South Bend 550A in Lawsons third edition page 184 goes from $5.00 to ex. condition $15.00 again these reels are used in the lake erie area for pearch fishing they go well with a steel rod. I have several of these on my boat and when the yellow pearch are in we dont miss too many fish! They in my opion much beter than this new fiberglass items. Your OHIO conection Col. Mark, look at the finish of your reel. If it has a "satin" nickeled look, it will be from 1931 or 32. If the finish looks chrome, it will be the 1933 or 34 and will have a line of knurling around the top of the headplate. Milt's right about the current market price. If it were a lefthander though, I'd put it at $200.
