South Benb Cast-oreno No 11-GJ Misprint?

Post by fishman »

Hi, I was just wondering if anyone could give me a value on what appears to be a misprinted reel by South Bend. It appears to be a relatively newer level wind reel(70's-80's?) that says South Benb not South Bend. Any idea on value or info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, fishman!

Fishman, the Cast-Oreno series (numbers 3, 5, 11, and 16) was sold from the mid 60's to the early 70's, give or take a few years with certain numbers. South Bend had committed itself to spin cast and spinning by then, and the cheap, made in Japan, baitcasters were offered just to have a complete line. That misspelling shows up from time to time, and the reel is so cheap that there isn't as much value as you would expect. It's remarkable that quality control people didn't catch it. Of course, the Japanese wouldn't. I suspect rather than take a loss on all the plates, they sold them "as is" at a discount. The GJ is a mystery. Usually, "Model A" marks the second model of a particular reel. There is a #11 without the GJ that has the correct spelling. My book has the reel at $50.00 because of the error, but it would have to be a die-hard SB collector who would buy it. Jim

Thanks, Jim for the info on the reel. That helps a lot.
That's OK. I enjoy helping with information. Many friends were willing to help me in the past. It's good to know it's appreciated.
Alright, I didn't want to be accused of just getting an appraisal and splitting without a word. Thanks, again!
Your welcome, and good luck with the reel. Jim :x
