Trowbridge Reel Info Needed

Post by tjolds »

I need some help from reel guru's. I just purchased a small (probably 40 yard) reel marked Trowbridge Boston on face plate. The face plate also has a turnable click knob ( clockwise, click on, counterclockwise, click off) and it also has a push/pull button on the rim for a drag. The foot is very long and stamped Pat'd Nov. 24th, 85. I know that Trowbridge's was a tackle seller in Boston from 1873 to 1900. I'm trying to determine who manufactured the reel and the significance of the patent date. Does the date refer to Kopf's reel foot patent or some other patent? I'll try to post some pictures in the next few days. Thanks, Terry Olds

Terry, you got it right. The patent date refers to Kopf's (reel) foot. He almost certainly made the reel for Trowbridge, and a lot of the reels with that corrugated foot are marked the same way.

Thanks
