It's dialogue from an old Lucky Strike commercial featuring champion caster Charlie Sutphin, Dan's mentor:

Dan says he, his mother and his father were all casting champions! Dunno if Charlie survived those cancer sticks or not!

Wow. I forget sometimes what a different world it was back then. Interesting stuff. Thanks, Dan and John.

I believe the " Gifford" being referred to is Frank Gifford famed running back of New York Giants. Some of us "seniors" remember seeing Chuck Bednarik standing over him celebrating after knocking him unconscious during a game in 1960.

And no hard alcohol/liquor or seductive sexual type ads on TV. The "young pups" can't even imagine a world like that.

Yes, Frank Gifford it was...and emailing with Dan this AM, it's likely those great tasting ciggies got him in the end!

I recall a game when Staubach of Dallas (how did he spell his name?), Shathrath (lineman from Notre Dame ) and Belettnicoff (school unknown-again, wretched spelling) were on the field and were mentioned for some reason together by the announcer. No mention was made of "The fiery furnace", but should have been. Say them in that order and see if you agree. Great names! Staubach was a class act, USNA grad as I recall.
Bad Bob. How bad was my memory?

Yes, Staubach was quite the straight-arrow...think Fred Biletnikoff (right, at least phonetically :-). ) was a wide receiver...and quite a stellar one. I doubt roger smoked Luckys...dunno about Fred...don't think he was quite as pure

I believe old Frank is still with us, having suffered through a concussion from Bednarik's hit and, worse, through years of sitting next to Howard Cosell with unplugged ears.

I lived less than a block away from where Sutphin's had their archery shop in Speedway, In. Never ventured in. My loss.

Oh, Wow! I shot bow in that shop in 1967! had no idea who owned it but it was one of the few indoor archery ranges around...I came all the way down from Layflat, IN (Purdue) just to shoot and get a bow for a buddy.

Googling around, I see that the Sutphin name was big in bloomington as well...some historic house burned there.

I looked through the 50 years of Speedway book put out in 1976 thinking maybe there might be something in it. Found nothing.

i was fortunate enuff to know him for over 50 yrs. he was a great champion and a better friend. i met him in 1961 at the a.c.a. nationals. 1 was 15 yrs old. i was competing in my 1st national tournement. he was 1 of my heroes for many years.
i was fortunate to win 3/8 plug acc. this was "his game" he owned it. he was the 1st person to ever shoot a perfect score in it. we were friends till he died. i have a large quantity of his custom reels and rods, he gave me.. he had some very unusual ideas of rod perfomance and reel performance. not all for me but still good. we had many shoot off's over the years. in the 80's in a Lexington ,Ky tournement, we shot of in 5/8 acc. i shot 2 perfect scores and last rd of 99 ot of 100. (10 shots at 40-80 ft)29 perfects and 1/1'miss.) in the shoot off. he stepped up and banged that target like his 1st. 30 shots ago. he was a great fellow. toughest competitor. better friend.
been gone about 5 yrs or so. passed naturally. my best friend was terry schneider, grandson of the man who invented the accuracy plug (budd's bait's). use to go to speedway and sit in chairs in the parking lot of the shopping center, race week. and watch. they closed the shop and the center, for the week.
miss him a lot. all of the great 1's are gone. just a few of us left. (not great just old)
my name is b.l. farley
lubbock texas
san antonio
competed in 40+nationals
national all around champion 1965
set world record spinning record. scarborough england 1965
5 world competitions for the u.s.a. team
nice to be here. ask i am around.

So happy to see the viewers and responses to this post. Charlie would be so happy we are keeping his memory alive. It's why I love that ORCA keeps the tradition of casting contests alive.

To expand on his history...his Archery shop came later in a shopping center south of the Indy 500 track on 16th street. His tackle shop was across (southwest) from the main entrance to the track. He was made an Honorary Member of the NFLCC several years ago. I'll send John Elder some pictures to post

I sent an e-mail to The Speedway Press to see if they had any archived articles about Charlie or the Archery Shop. Got no response. Could be because I've sent some notes in the past critical of Speedway. Perhaps they have my number as I'm sure a lot of folks do.

ORCA was founded for the sole purpose of preserving the sort of fishing reel history which men and women like you helped create. Thank you for your contribution.
