Screwdriver and other related ?s

Post by Steve M »

I'm in the process of cleaning a newly aquired Zwarg Maximo 4/0, and I have several frozen screws- What do you folks like to use to free stuck screws, that wont damage the Hard Ruber side plates- I would also like a recomendation for a good Screw driver set for this sort of fine detail work- Any online sources for the Screwdrivers would be great- Thanks all-
Steve!

:) 8) :!: :?:  Steve M. as Your reel has those delicate hard rubber plates , your work is cut out for you! First a good soak with Marvel Lubricating oil, most parts houses or walmart , tractor supply etc cary it, next very carfuly with a thin pice of brass metal you will have to shape it into a slot cleaner, start to push out the dirt and stuff a little at a time , soak again and re clean until the slots a free from and material thats not part of the screw . I get my screwdrivers from BROWNNELS gun tools and sights, DONT have the address on the desk however any gun shop can give it to you. Phil If your reading this you mentioned another suplier of gun screwdrivers. Aso Don champion uses feeler gauge material. ( once you have a fitting tool, dont star to unscrew ,however try to nudge it to tighten, if it moves then soak again and then try to take it out, ( a strong word of caution if it starts to move easly, just work it back and forth until you are certain it is comming out, these things are known to have a galvanic action that desolved the metal , then you would have to drill out the remaing part. These early reels and other items from 1868 thru 1919 used many different thread pitches in this country and that is a problem if you would need a replacement. Do Your Home work well and the reward will be sucess! Col. M. Lorens aka SWIM JIG in the changing weather state of OHIO

Hello Col. Thanks for the pointers- A pre-soaking with a penetrating lube it shall be! By then my proper tools should arrive! I am also dealing with a frozen, Crank handle cap- (looks like nothing will be a simple matter in getting to the guts of this one!) I have buttoned the drag down, and doused the shaft of the crank in Liquid wrench. Then inverting the reel to rest as (hopefully) the penetrant will works it way down to where it needs to get- This seemed like a logical approach- To any that may have disassembled a Zwarg 4/0, Am I missing something here?- There is no secret password to the threaded crank shaft is there? (ie, reversed threads or any other mysterious buisness?) Im off to the grinder to fine tune a wide slot headed screw driver to fit that particular cap- Onward and upward- Steve!

John- Thanks for the link- Good stuff-!- I figure I will give the gentle coaxing of the screws, and cap, (after repeated lube baths) about a weeks worth of attempts Then I'll just settle in with the Q-tips and old sock for a good surface cleaning- She runs nice and smooth, and all oil access points are functional- There will definitely be a point where I call it a draw, rather than bugger it up! Anyone have any experience with "Kroil" penetrating lube- A machenist friend said its the best stuff around, might have good aplications in the reel world too- Check the link-

and so says my buddy, Ward Coppersmith, who makes a living in a machine shop...if that don't bring it loose, in combination with Milt's methods, then it's God's way of telling you to back off!
