Finding fly line weight

Post by jimbofish »

I've come across a couple of methods to determine the best fly line weight for a given rod.

I have the opposite problem. I have several lines on extra spools that I don't remember what weight they are. I put stickers on the spools initially, but some have either come off or are unreadable from oil seepage.

I don't fly fish very much, maybe twice a year and not at all last year, but I've got the itch to use them this year... if the snow and ice ever melt! I'm not that skilled of a caster to tell the difference by feel.

So, is there a way to determine the weight of a fly line?

Yes, there is actually a small scale that is made specifically for weighing fly lines that is available from several of the larger fly fishing tackle houses. I'll try to find the exact name of the scale and the store that has them. Back later today. Colby

Any fly tackle dealer that carries Umpqua products can get the scale. It is a Umpqua fly line scale. Umpqua product. May be other makers also. Colby

Your mention of a scale led me to google up this...

Is this what you were thinking of?

I also came across a home-made scale at http://www.common-cents.info/part4.pdf.

EDIT: I see others have also pointed it out as well as the conversion chart.

Thanks to all. Seems all I needed was a point in the right direction.

That's it. Weigh the first 30 feet and then you'll know the line weight. Colby

Once the weight has been determined you might try my method for permanent ID of the weight. After fighting with this problem for several years, I took a permanent alcohol marker and a foot or so back from the end of the line made the appropriate number of bands of black or red or what ever color suits you. Each band is approximately one quarter of an inch wide with the same size space between the bands. 4 bands for a 4 weight , 5 bands for a 5 weight etc etc. Saves me a lot of time and grief each season.

I will do that, along with replacing the stickers.
