Marbelized Philbrook & Paine

Post by Ray Hencken »

Has anyone ever seen or know of a marbelized Philbrook & Paine fly reel which has the spelling PAYNE rather than the misspelling Paine? and Bangor, ME stamped under the word Makers?

Ray,

For what it's worth (quite a lot I would think), here's an excerpt from the upcoming May 17 Lang's Auction.
patent number 191813. Philbrook assigned the rights to the patent to Hiram L. Leonard, with the manufacturing remaining with Philbrook and his partner Edward Payne (all known stampings have Payne's name spelled "Paine"), all from Bangor, Maine.

I had a marbelized Philbrook & Paine trout reel in my collection for many years and have not seen the trout or salmon-sized version spelled any differently.

Here is one current website I found that uses the "Payne" spelling:

I found that uses the "Payne" spelling:
As do/did many when describing the company, including A.J. Campbell in Classic and Antique Fly-Fishing Tackle, because that's actually the way it was supposed to be spelled: http://books.google.com/books?id=zY8vsd ... me&f=false

The point of my question was that all of the ORIGINAL Philbrook & Paine marbelized reels (made by Francis J. Philbrook and Edward F. Payne) that I and others know of have the spelling Paine rather than Payne stamped on the reels. My uneducated guess is that whoever made the metal stamp for imprinting the names either mispelled the name or perhaps ,more likely, the letter "i" was easier to fashion than the letter "y" on the stamp.
I have seen a picture of a marbelized reel with the spelling Payne rather than Paine and questioned whether or not the stamping was original and was asking if anyone else had seen original reels stamped "Payne".
I was not refering to modern reels that are said to be made in the Philbrook & Payne style.

My hunch is if it it says Payne its more than likely a forgery or counterfeit, but then one never knows what has yet to be unearthed.
