Here are a couple of pix. of the Home here in Whitney across the Lake from me that has been on the news lately.
Over 700 Grand in the Brink...
Before pic here shows about 2 years ago before the cliff gave way
Next is Today when they Burnt it to keep it from all going in Lake. SAD thing for the owners whose insurance is NOT going to pay !
I feel bad for the folks but have to admit that I felt less bad when I saw that it wash't a sinkhole...what were they thinking, building that house that close to the cliff?! I realize it probably wasn't quite THAT close when they built it, but sure looks like it's always been in striking distance!
It was @ 60 ft or better from the edge. There is a lot of this happening around this area and has been for years . This is the first house we lost but I bet there will be more .
We have a guy a stones throw away from our place building a 5 tier castle on a bluff I have seen many a 50 foot or better chunk fall off it and this guy drilled piers just a matter of time before I have to move out away from that point fishin for sandies.
Good thing NO ONe was hurt just in their pocket books.
Lots of these houses on the North Shore of Oahu are owned by professional surfers. Live by the wave, die by the wave

House on the bluff-Appears to be a joint (vertical fracture without offset like a fault, common as meth labs here in TN and caused mostly by regional stress relief in rock units). It seems to have been the plane of parting that allowed the large segment of bluff to fall away. Could have been initiated by wave action over a long period undermining the base. Evidenced by the shear face of rock visible beneath the house-a sure sign of a joint. Hey, but what do I know about CA geology?
