great lakes reel?

Post by mattp »

hey everyone, new to this board obviously..

recently have found a few older steel rods in my basement that my father accumulated over the years, a man who builds custom rods with years of fishing experience. i recently looked at one of the combinations sitting in a dark corner, and the reel really interested me- i couldnt understand how it works. no drag, which i guess is comon for older reels, but i do not understand how one would cast it, as the spool is enclosed, and there is no mechanism for releasing the line. all it says is 'great lakes 98'

i assume it was made by great lakes, 98 is the model? it almost looks like a push button reel, but no button, and the spool is on an angle in relation to the rod. the original cork spool is still intact, something i found interesting.

is this a collectable reel, in any demand or whatnot? im sure someone could use it more than me, collecting dust in the basement. just wouldike some background before putting it on ebay, since there does not seem to be much information out there about these.

great lakes 98

:) 8) :!: :?:  that is whats called (the great lakes holiday reelyou push the spool to cast it, somewhat unique, no real value unless you had the box and paperwork they bring around $6.00 to $15 or so wth a box and paperwork and they must work, and not be damaged. I would change the line and place a few drops of oil on the moving parts and fish with it, May draw some attention, they do work and are fun to fish with. Col. Matt, that reel is called the Holiday. It's a closed face spinning reel. You couldn't find a button to push to cast because there isn't one. You push on the spool to cast. In good condition, it's only worth #10 to $15 because there isn't much demand for that kind of reel at present. Keep it in the family. (oops, I just found Milt's post - sorry for the duplication) Jim

:o  :?  :!: :?:  Jim, he emailed me several pics and is a duplicate to a UNAMED reel actualy 2 of them it works simlar to a 1810 Shakesper or other south bend or shakesper reels you turn the crank about 1/2 turn backwards and the line pic up drops down and you cast it, when you wind it the pick up comes into place and winds the line on. The handle can be placed on either side, mine are a redish brown cover and a Black frame and Chrome trim all it says is model 500 pat applied for! The round wheel is used for a line drag. Wait to he showes a pic of it I have one simlar that says holiday however its 1/2 the size and is made in Japan. these are or mine are made in the USA.
