Shakespeare Au Sable reel 1864 parts

Post by andynash »

Hi every one, im new to the forum and thought some one out there may be able to help. I have been given a near mint Shakespeare reel, Inglis model 1864 Au Sable with the code GD. Its green and about 3 and a half inches diameter but it has no winder or crank as you guys might call it. Does anyone know where i might get a replacement? I,d really like to get it working so I can use it. Will happily pay postage to the UK. Lord knows how it ended up over here but I think its from the 40,s if my research is correct. Any info about this reel is gratefully accepted also. Many thanks. Andy

Looking, it was in production from 1947-58. That is about all I know about it!

Is this a fly reel with a single grasp or a baitcaster with 2 grasps?

Not sure what single grasp actually means, perhaps over here we call it something different but if you mean does it have one small knob on the crank handle then yes i think it does. I,ve looked at a picture somewhere on this website and it shows a single lever, if you like, starting from the centre of the reel and protruding outwards towards the rim only about and inch and a quarter or so with a small chrome knob on the end. The crank lever would have a small bend outwards so its not so close to the body of the reel. I have heard these handles are known to break often so I am hoping that some one will have a stock of them somewhere. I think at the moment is set at right hand wind and wonder if anyone knows if it can be switched to left. It doesnt look obvious to me but hey what do I know about 50,s Canandian reels !! I will try and work out how to upload a photo after the weekend maybe but I have seen a picture here I,m sure on the Orca website. Many thanks to all responders.

Im impressed with myself for these. This isnt my reel just a stock picture from the net. See the crank handle on the front, this is what I am missing. Hope this helps. Andy

Hey Andy, just from looking at the handle, there are some Shakespeare Russells and Kalamazoo Empress reels that have a similar handle. The Empress would be your most inexpensive route.

Hi George and thanks for your reply. Its been a while since I put that post up. As it happens a new winder came up on Ebay uk two months ago and so the reel is now complete. I must say it is beautiful and cleaned up perfectly. Its a lovely reel but sadly it has to go now. 1947 made in Toronto by John Inglis co for Shakespeare. I think they switched the production to Kalamazoo shortly after this. Theres a nice story behind how it came to be in my hands too. If the Canadian fly fishers are anything like the English when it comes to collecting vintage reels, the home grown reels are always the most popular, so unless I get a good offer beforehand it will be on Ebay soon. Thanks for all your help.

Hiya, I hadnt really given it much thought yet but I suppose around $70 plus postage would be fair if I take the ones on Ebay as a guide. Its in really good condition and looks very similar condition to the picture I posted on this site some months ago. They were library photos from Google. I,m trying to convert dollars to pounds sterling in my head here. I might be able to take some pictures of my one and email them to you? You wouldnt be disappointed, there are no blemishes at all and all the screws are present. Its been taken apart and cleaned of dust and dirt and is in perfect working order. I appreciate its a difficult thing to assess by photo but it is lovely. 1947 I believe. What do you think? And how would we sort out payment? I,d have to take it down to the postal office and have the postage estimated and let you know but I wouldnt have thought it would be more than $20 or maybe $25. Regards, Andy
