Reel-Paint restore

Post by Tony Malatesta »

 Hi guys! I have a question concerning paint touch-up on reels. I'm not interested in a full paint restore but i'd like to repair small rubs. Is it safe to use rubbing compound like the kind you use on cars or is there something else more effective :?: Canadian

paint touchup

Tony:

I think it's going to depend on the nature of the damage. If the paint is flaking, then even a good repair is going to be at risk unless you stabilize the loose paint (if you've got a steady hand and a magnifier, you can use small amounts of superglue and a pin to tack down the edges by working it under the edges). If the paint is chipped, the edge of the damage is going to be more defined and will be harder to conceal. My suggestion is to handle it just like a car paint ding, being very careful to overlap the new paint as little as possible over the old, building it up layer by layer, and then using fine rubbing compound or 1500+ grit wet sandpaper to blend it in. After repair, you might find that waxing the repaired area will help even out the gloss.
