must be very tight. xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx against the spindle (i.e. reverse) - guess you'll have to pinch the drive gear on the inside of the case. It's made so that cranking forward tightens the handle on the spindle.
OOPS I GOT IT BACKWARDS !
On the 300, reeling forward IS counterclockwise. So you need to turn CLOCKWISE
On the 301 it's going to be counterclockwise to reverse.

mitchell takedown
It's been a while since I've removed the handle on one of these, but the crank handle comes off of the crank shaft counterclockwise, just as Ron Mc sez. The handle also comes loose by turning the handle counterweight counterclockwise, which allows you to pull the crank handle forward, disengaging the lock pin and allowing the handle to be rotated 180 degrees for storage. In a salt water environment, the aluminum is susceptible to corrosion in the threads and may require several sessions with an appropriate penetrating solvent/lube to free the threads up- be patient, gentle and careful (the aluminum isn't very hard and can be damaged by overzealous disassembly). Good luck with it and welcome to our bizarre little world.
