Sellers "DELUXE" Fly Casting Reel

Post by Bruce Davis »

I picked up a Sellers fly reel in box with pouch and paper work, after researching with what material I have I found a great article by Steve Vernon in Fishing Collectibles Magazine which even told me about mr. Sellers Dog, also found info in Campbell Fly Fishing Tackle book.
My question is the label on the box says Seller "Deluxe" Fly Casting "Bas-Kit Reel" E.J. Sellers Dreggist Kutztown Penna Neither article mention Deluxe so is the one I have a higher end Reel ( I hope) Thanks for any info.

What is "Deluxe" about yours is that it is in the box with paperwork!

Can we see some pictures? Please!

Great find.

Bruce, the only intact Sellers I've seen that was different from the usual model (yours, for example, and mine, too) was the reel in the upper photo. It was our buddy's reel, and I shot it about 15 years ago. The only differences from the reel in the lower photo are the non-folding knob and the lack of the circular groove. I see yours lacks the groove, too. All the other Sellers reels I've seen have had the folding knob, which is shown in the patent drawings. I suspect that the non-folding knob was a replacement or that our buddy's reel was an early version, possibly a Trexlertown prototype. If the reel's still around, you can peek under the cap and see if there are any signs of handle replacement work.

"Deluxe" appears only on the box label, not on the pamphlet, so I'd guess that it simply means it's a deluxe fly reel, not a deluxe model of a Sellers fly reel. And yours is one of the deluxest of all. Now find us one of the Sellers hitching posts.
