wipe off the grease and have a look with a lens...that is likely "Mitchell Garcia 440" on your reel. Neat thing about that reel is the way it retrieves the line...crank it and check out the stroke action on the spool. Several mitchels know this trick!

Does your reel look like this?

???? what # and leter??

:o :? :!: :?:   yay-banana USA Ok , as for a 44R in the mitchel line, there are none to my feeble knowledge! , as most Mitchels had 3 #s and later 4#s and leters. You may want to check more closely for the correct name and country (this is generaly found on the foot! Or if you can load some pics of it , do a botom view, both sides , the front view and rear view! Trust me on this someone in our ORCA Club Will identify your reel , as for a price? thats subjective and Condition is everthing! One small scratch or paint or finish rub can and will knock off many Dollars of value. These reels are like coins or postage stamps, if a coin is scratched or Wizzed ie. repaired then the value is reduced by as much as to only face value, same with stamps , and reels and guns, As John elder stated please list all the wording etc! Bunfight, Galions are a French made spin reel. Ben Wright does not have them listed in his book so that is probably why many non-spin reel collectors don't know about them. I can't tell you much about them either but I have seen them on Ebay. The Galion, Kingfisher, and Kilt brands are very similiar reels but with different decals or logos. I can't tell you what the exact connection between these brands and Mitchell was but they was some kind of connection. They have some neat features different than the much more common Mitchells, which does set them apart. Value wise they are not high end reels but are worthy of collecting. Once they become more know by the collectors their value may increase, but for right now they are not highly sought after. If you like them, now would be a good time to collect them while you can pick them up very reasonably. I have a Kilt 3 which it is very similiar or exactly alike other models with the Galion and Kingfisher logos on them. Before Col Milt makes this suggestion, I am not going to or plan on writing any article for the Reel News on Galion, Kingfisher, or Kilt reels.

well thank you all for your replies. i think jsrepairs has just about answered my questions. my intention was to use the reel, but as it is in such good condition, just one or two very minor scratches, i think i will keep it as it is and try to locate another one to use.
thank you all.

mitchell galion 44-R

Post by Ben »

Hi bunfight,
The Galoin R series were made from the late 1960's to 1975.
there are about 15 diff. models that came in a variety of colors.
they are an all plastic econo reel made for the euro market place.
no one knows for sure if they were made by mitchell or Bretton of
France? the kingfisher K series are the same reels but were made
for Garcia for sales in the US. neither are very highly collectable.

Thanks for that Ben. you say they are made of plastic, but the only bit on this one is the spool.

Bunfight,

Yeah, your body probably is metal. Check your side cover to see if it is plastic or metal. My Kilt 3 has a metal body with a plastic spool and side cover. Randy
