Pflueger Supreme Reel Foot - Removable?

Post by djh »

I am restoring/upgrading a Supreme 1576. I plan to actually use the reel, so I don't care if it remains in original condition. I want to install the reel foot from a 1573, which looks like it will interchange. My question is: are the phillips head screws that hold on the foot intended to be removed - they look like they may have been peened over. I tried to loosen them, but they're very solid. Advice appreciated.

milt's your man on this one! but one thing is sure..you need an exact fit on that phillips head if you're gonna have any luck...that may be the "peening over" you see, as someone else played with them in the past. I would think a close look under a lens will tell you if it was intentionally done, either at the factory or by a fisherman. I know in my limited experience, it seems like once these screws start to come loose, they are a perpetual pain to keep tight. I wonder if reels were ever sent back to the factory for a remedy of that problem? Certainly, lots of reels were sent back to Pfl for a fix of one type or another.

While I am att it, when was the 'Phillips" head screw invented? Inquiring minds want to know!

:o :?  :?:   jester USA Ok unless you have some very presicion tooling at your figertips (Dont even try that stunt!) first off those so called screws were put in and peaned over then the complete foot asembly was plated! This serverd three purposes, one those pesky crossbars and the foot did not come apart, 2nd it made you buy the compleate assembly 3rd they didnt want the crosbars used in other pfluger reels! If you notice any other pfluger they have done the same thing on the skil cast etc, As for the screws they are a anealed brass, strong except brital as glass! As for the interchange the part # for thr 1576 cross bar or foot is 7612, for the 1573 its 112,and for the 1575 its 112 so___ 1573 and 1575 being 112 they interchange 1576 is by itself! the 1577 is by itself its #7712) They show no screws separate or cross bars or foot separate! If you are determend to modify the cross bar and foot, you have two choices, drill and retap or--- learn how to sliver solder and not destort the foot or bars or change the metal color with the heat required to do this! If you will send me a business size envelope with 3 stamps on it I will make copies of the factory manual pages you need make certain to addrese it to youself! Our Address is( E-Z Action Products Company 759 Terra Lane Amherst Ohio 44001-1116-07 atten Milt or Ryan and a note what pages you need! Col. M. lorens aka SWIM JIG

Swim Jig: thanks for a very informative answer - I'll get that SASE in the mail to you soon. Your answer has convinced me to leave well enough alone. This particular 1576 is in near pristine condition - except for the reel foot. I'll just wait for a complete foot assembly to come along.
