Narragansett Free Spool

Post by orourke »

Hey Orcans!

I bought a three reel deal on ebay last week. All reels were dirty and not well described but I knew one to be a Bronson-Coxe. Turns out it was a 3/OBC manufactured in 1936.

One was a Penn 85.

The other was engraved Narragansett Free Spool on the face plate. The face plate is a brown material. (It was black when I stared cleaning it) You have to tilt the reel in light to make our the engraving. It has two click buttons on the tail plate, and a straight counter balanced handle. Reel seat is attached to pillars with two slotted screws. On the bottom of the foot it says 250.

Who made the Narragansett? Does it have any value? Its not a Bronson so I don't have a clue about it.

Thanks for helping.

I'll take a stab and say Montague. I think I have one lying around here somewhere.

Dave:

I have several of them and agree with Brian. Probably Montague. I'm not sure which one you have, but if you want to contact me, I may be able to find a Bronson to trade you if you're interested. The narrangasetts I have are pretty nice reels and I like them. (but don't do anymore cleaning on it :) joe klaus

:) 8) :!: :?:  cool-thumb :type: USA dave, acording to Lawsons 3rd edition page 113 the 250 yrd reel in ex condition is priced at $65.00, the side plates are HR or hard rubber, if using metal glow polish like I showed you at Mt Pilier show , that will bring out the natural color, simichrome will work except it has too much amonia in it and requires a wash off with distiled water Cholrine free or damage will occur very fast! Would make a nice reel to use at the texas Nationals! Your Ohio conection Col. M. Lorens aka SWIM JIG

If there's a bass (or any other kind of fish) in one of those lakes that requires use of a 250 yd Narragansett to handle, I'll have my camera ready when they pull him out :D
