2016 Report

Post by Brian F. »

From Richard Lodge (Thanks for the great report!):

A nice photo of a fly casting lesson, given this morning by Colby Sorrells on the lawn below the Buckberry Lodge in the Smokys. Thanks to Patti Carey for this photo, taken from her drone (or, more accurately, the 3rd floor balcony).

Also, photos from a couple of the great reel displays by Henry Caldwell (showing a Hardy Fortuna reel, also displayed above) and by Jim Schottenham, showing an amazing collection of Sellers sidemount reel parts, left over from when production ceased.

Also from Richard Lodge:

Here we are in the beautiful Smoky Mountains of Tennessee, enjoying the company of reel collectors from around the country for the annual ORCA National at the Lodge at Buckberry Creek. A couple photos from last night's first "Wine and Reels" gathering, where everything enjoyed reacquainting, talking about mystery reels - or under plain unusual reels- and drinking a bit of vino.

Today's scheduling includes a flycasting clinic, the antique fishing contest on a stretch of private trout water, the ongoing silent reel auction (to benefit ORCA) and more Wine and Reels tonight. Tune in later for more photos!

Looks like you all are having a great time. Please keep the report and photos coming. This is great for those of us who are unable to attend. Too bad we can'talk have some means of negotiating purchases and trades from afar (just a thought).

More from Richard:

If you know anything about Stan Bogdan's fly reels, you know they are 1) really well made 2) fabulous fishing machines and 3) worth every penny of their high price.

ORCA members at the national in Tennessee got a rare treat today, visiting the very gracious Earl Worsham and his wife Margit Brooks-Worsham at their beautiful mountaintop estate. Earl was a close friend of Bogdan, the late Nashua, N.H., reel maker and regularly fishes with the trout and salmon reels he acquired from Stan over the years. We enjoyed hearing tales about Stan, who Earl described as the best salmon fishermen he ever knew. All in all, it was a rare treat to visit the estate and see Earl's Hoagy Charmichael and Pinky Gillum-made fly rods.

Oh, Jacob V. eat your heart out. He has a few and fishes with them. If I owned one of them it would be under lock and key, for display only.
