Barnegat help
After some pretty extensive researching online, I have found very little on anything Barnegat (and what little I have found came from Reel Talk!)
I recently inherited "The Barnegat" as it is stamped, and found a '100' stamped on it. The only other marking I can find on it says 'steel pivot berring'.
It doesn't have any plastic, rubber, etc. parts on it, making me assume it's very old, pre-bakelite age.
The only thing I really know about it is the manufacturer, H-I. Any other info would be appreciated, age, collect-ability, rarity....
See photo bucket link for pictures.

Re: Barnegat help
The reel in the photos has hard rubber side plates. Also appears to be a Montague product, rather than H-I?

Don't forget, though, that while HI purchased some companies to expand their reel manufacturing they also sold a lot of other company's reels with the HI name on them. Just because it says HI on it, that doesn't mean HI manufactured it.

Does it say "H-I" on it?

It doesn't actually say h-i, I'm just assuming it is from research I've done. It may not be. Thanks everyone!

Re: Barnegat help
Your reel is a Montague Metal Disc Trade Reel made in the Montague Brooklyn N.Y. reel factory in the early 1900's. The stamping on the reel "BARNEGAT" is for a very popular fishing spot on the Atlantic Ocean. The Barnegat Township is in Ocean County New Jersey with their own Barnegat Light House. Montague stamped a lot of their trade reels with the names of popular fishing locations and all kinds of other names.
Montague made the Metal Disc style reel in the very small size trout reel up to the large size Ocean reel. They did not stamp their name on a reel until 1927 when they started to sell retail. Bill Hoerter Metal Disc Reel Collector
