Do you guys ever see a reel that will fit wonderfully into your collection, but the price is to steep? Then someone else bids the price requested and you start thinking: well I haven't seen one in the last five years, when will I have another chance to fill the hole.
Good answer, Willis...we will be dead a very long time! ...so enjoy the time you have!
A couple more thoughts.
..i always rationalize going over the normal $ level by telling myself that i can sell these items or those in the collection to break even on the deal.....and sometimes i actually do!
Also, at least with me, my interests keep moving about, so what seems like the perfect add now may not even fit in a year!
One last thought.....the internet has shown us that the list of reels that WON'T show up again is infinitesimally small! So, don't lose sleep over one reel!
For my 2 cents. I think there is always someone following you. Over the years , I have passed up something thinking one will come up cheaper down the (long) road. Problem is more times than not , in my humble opinion , it doesn't. However, the hunt is part of the game. If you want it, it doesn't cost your mortgage, hurt your marriage , these days I buy it. I just don't tell the wife.( actually I do tell her)
Her favorite phrase is " whatcha' buy this junk for"? (Actually she doesn't say this).
On an unrelated topic- what if you can take it with you to the great tackle show in the sky? Picture John the Elder sitting at his table full of neat stuff and you holding a harp. Dang it !
Collecting stuff is an elemental part of being human. Consider the many early aboriginal graves with arrows, spear points, pottery, beads, and fishing reels buried with the dearly departed. Don't sweat owning a bunch of expensive reels. Remember the new car you just bought lost two thousand bucks in value when you drove it off the lot. Think how many reels that would have bought!
Thanks for the encouragement guys, all sage advice.
I am sure this has happened to others, but my Murphy's Law for reel collecting seems to be:
1) If I pass, then the reel does not come up again for a long time.
2) If I buy, then next week 3 other people list the same reel for sale (better than mine and maybe cheaper).
I figure this is a pretty common situation for newer collectors. One thing that has really helped me as my collection has grown is patience. Waiting for an example without buggered screws or missing parts is worth the wait. This was hard in the beginning, but makes for a much more satisfying collection.
I think I am going to take a run at this one. Let you know how it turns out.
I say buy it! I always but stuff i have never seen before, which as the years pile up fewer and fewer things are out there that draw my interest. AND if another becomes available in better condition...buy that one too! Then sell off the previous one. Upgrade. And ya never know...sometimes after flippin, you hit the black. Not only do you have a better example, bet a few pennies in your pocket to boot.
