Jim Schottenham was kind enough to supply me with some photos of the Holzmann/Dirkes First Patent Model and have been added to the web page.

More Holzmann Reel Photos added to Web Page
Re: More Holzmann Reel Photos added to Web Page
I'm confused about the labeling. Holzmann's 1890 patent included a bayonet mount, a click, and a thumb-operated brake. He didn't patent a freespool clutch until 1900. Here are the patent drawing and the clutch:

The Wolf eventually showed up with an adaptation of the 1900 clutch, which operated via pushbutton (like the Meisselbach Neptune clutch) instead of a sliding button. The Wolf clutch:

"Patent model" usually refers to just that: a model submitted with a patent application. So I don't understand what the Wolf has to do with the 1890 patent (or the 1900 patent, model-wise, for that matter). It's an H reel that showed up almost 2 decades after the 1890 patent.
BTW, Dirkes ran a variety store in NYC and suddenly became a "mfr. of rods & reels" about 1888. He became one of NYC's leading tackle dealers and incorporated in 1925.

Alright, now we're getting some action. Thanks Steve, I'll update the website accordingly. Thanks for the input.
BTW back at ya, A.H. Dirkes also has an ad in the 1891 Forest and Stream as "BAIT HEADQUARTERS, 50th St. & 9th Av., NY - White Worms, Shedder Crabs, etc., constantly on hand throughout the Fishing Season."

There you go Steve. I remember when l first mentioned/told you about "The Wolf" being a Holzman reel. That was what 25 years ago? Only thing being my reel IS stamped Holzman. I sold a nice version of the reel stamped The Wolf on ebay 16 years ago to I believe Jay White. Thanks Jim for the catalog posting, can't discredit that! Tight Lines Nick in NY Holzman collector!

Hey John, I'd like to send you photos to possible post of what l believe to be a size 6 or a 6-0 Holzman tuna/big game reel. I'll take a photo of it next to a Meek 10 for size comparison. It dwarfs to Meek especially in spool width! Tight Lines Nick in NY....Holzman Rod & Reel collector (even though I don't believe Holzman made his own rods....that's where Perez comes in but another day)

Nick, I remember our talk. I also remember being really skeptical
until you and J.Z. proved it beyond a shadow of a doubt.
As to the H tuna reel, I remember seeing one at some show, maybe the one where we first met. The owner was one of those "I'm gonna hold on to it" guys
, at least at that time. Same reel?
