I have an unusual fly reel. It's hard rubber and brass, 40 yard size, with a diameter of 2 inches. The foot is Kopf-type with a patent date of November 24, 1885 (PAT. NOV. 24. 85.). The reel rim had a chip missing that I repaired and I replaced two screws - fillister 3-48. If anyone has any spare brass ones they are willing to sell or trade let me know, I could only find blackened stainless steel. Anyone have any ID for this reel? Thanks!
Hey, George...board's a bit slow in August! I kept meaning to go browse possibles and get back, but always got sidetracked! That is really a neat reel find! Based on that foot and past research by Steve V., i think you nailed the ID as a Kopf product....what was that reel doing wandering in the desert???!
Hi John, and thanks for the info It looks so small in the case with my other reels! Bought this one as a project reel off eBay, seller located in Ohio, and listed as "estate find". I've wandered around the desert quite a bit, but I just couldn't seem to find anything else like it
Yep, you have the correct ID, it is in fact a Kopf. The reason you've had a hard time finding one is likely due to Kopf not making many of any one style reel for long. Esteemed Kopf collector Henry Caldwell can attest to that, with perhaps the largest collection of Kopf reels in the world - he finds scant few that are duplicates in his collection.
