Bache Brown Spinster

Post by Mike Franzen »

Another reel dug up out of an old collection. Wondering how old and who made it.

There's a ton of info on Airex's "Bache Brown" model under the "Search" feature above.

Mike,
As the side plate says, it was made by the Airex Corporation, which was a Division of the Lionel (yes trains) Corporation after Lionel bought controlling interest in 1948. Bache Brown (USA Luxor fame) was a technical adviser and designer for Airex/Lionel. Here's some old discussion about the various spinster models.

Most of the discussion doesn't get model specific, but from the limited info shown in your posted photo, if it has a 3 piece handle akin to Mitchell but with a pinned round knob it is more than likely a Model 3 from 1953ish. Not real valuable, $10 or so in the condition of yours.

Mike, could you post a picture of the handle side of the reel?
