To Restore or Not Restore, That is the question. Whether it...

Post by LEF »

Sorry, couldn't resist. Picked up a Hart Umqua Salmon reel as part of a lot. It aplpears to have been used in salt water, and not washed. Cosmetically in pretty rough shape. Try to decide if it is worth the effort to restore. The problem is, I like it. It would be a terrific steelhead reel (has ball bearings) Any advice would be appreciated. Perhaps it is only good for parts?

Shoot, if it runs freely and has a decent drag, clean it up, lube it, and take it fishing! Looks like one heck of a Rat Reel to me!

If it needs more help and you are not up to tackling it, send it out!

Thanks for the input. Will try and make a rat reel. Two questions though;

Any suggestions as to refinishing the side plates, epoxy, paint, etc.

How to polish the old corroded chrome off, Sand paper, steel wool, some wheel on an dremel tool.

How to smooth ut the filed portions of the frame?

Thanks.
