Don't know what it sold for but I sold mine years ago at a Langs auctions WITH CURVED BUTT, ROD AND CUSTOM LEATHER REEL CASE WITH LOCK for bout $1,800. Thorton Ibitson purchased it, found out later. Guess prices are going up! Its been a while since I've seen a NICE example. They can't be too many out there. I've personally once seen 2 more 16-0 cradle examples not the 14-0 sold. It looked like there were 2 people who wanted it by the gestures of the auctioneer. That's all it takes! 3 is even better!

Interesting thing about cradle reels. Whatever exists is all there will ever be and they were never a high production item, so, if you want one, get it while you can.

The barn finds are getting harder to find. Not to say they do not happen; but, sellers are getting more savvy in our hobby.

I was surprised that it went that low, given the historic tip that came with that cradle!

This has always been an overlooked and undervalued behemoth of a reel. Glad to see it finally getting the respect it deserves.

I think the condition hurt the value. The rod butt was missing and the rod tip was missing a guide and in need of a restoration. A cleaner example might bring $5000.

I remember feeling really sad sending her off to OZ. My only salvation was that I knew it was going to a good home.

John, I was under bidder and quite frankly have not slept worth a damn since. The martuna tip made up for the rest. Wish they went off later in the day when my friend Jim takes over, Jim Beam that is. Doug

John Elder & Mike,

It was a lucky day for me and all thanks to both John and Mike that I had the opportunity to purchase this fantastic item. A rare Coxe cradle and a rare Tycoon Scion rod both in very good condition. Thanks again.

So Ray how did you come by your Coxe cradle ? Obviously John and Mike helped you out but did you buy it in an auction or a private sale ?? Beautiful rig ! I will bet shipping wasn't cheap. John Taylor

Hello John,

The deal was very interesting. John Elder sent the rig to me. I packed it into two containers and shipped it to Ray.
Normally, that would not make sense; but, there is a unspoken factor here that clears up the illogical factor. Because I am in the Airline Business, I have a discount with FedEx, a big discount. That is why we went that way. Sending a large item from California to New York, to then retrace 3000 miles of the trip back across the USA to California again and then on to Australia would not normally make sense, unless there is a special case involved. This was a special case for a very special collectible.
Besides that, I just had to touch it myself.......................... :D Even though this has been a under appreciated big game rig in the market, it was not that way for me. If I could have afforded to keep it, I would have, I felt this was a very historically important rig.
Sadly, it was too much for me to comfortably afford. Even back then we were talking in the thousands and I had kids in college. But, I was very happy to pass it on to Ray. He and I have a long time friendship and I felt like I was keeping it in the family. So the process was good for both of us in a way.

Here's Joseph Coxe holding one of his quaint little cradle reels. What do you suppose that bad boy is worth?

I believe that is a Joe Coxe cradle reel, size 20/0, not Coxe / Bronson cradle reel. The value on a full classic like that has no ceiling. Depends who the bidders are. Sort of like asking how much my Supercharged, 12 cyl, Duisenberg, Model J is worth :?:

OK, I know you like them. If I see something, I will say something. They are very scarce, the only Joe Coxe cradle reel I ever had the opportunity to buy was the one I sent to Oz.

But, one never knows what the future brings
