Is this Handle real or homemade

Post by Reelman2 »

This is a Shakespeare Perfect reel with a double knob super long handle. I would say it is probably homemade but not sure. The knobs are correct but thee are not rivets on the back side that hold the posts onto the handle.
Also I have never seen a double knob handle on a Perfect reel. What do you think

Montague sold their reels with a handle very similar to this as an option. It was popular ca. 1915-1920. I believe that is original, although I can't recall seeing a Shakespeare one before.

The knobs are typical of Shakespeare reels from the 1910s. This is a Model 1919. As you know, the model number reflects the year it was made.

But what about the fact that there are no rivets on the bottom side of the foot. Did the Montague ones have them or not?
Collect mostly Ky style reels; Meek, Heddon, Horton, Pflueger Redifor and Worth, etc.

Yes the knobs are definitely shake or S. Bend which were pretty much interchangeable. The reel pictured is a 1910 model which is evident by the type of jeweled end caps it has and of course it is is also stamped 1910.

The original catalogs from 1910 and 1912 show the Perfect with a counterbalanced handle and different type grip like the style seen on Ron's reel.
