Reel I.D.?

Post by Reeltyme »

Help! Does this reel manufacturer look familiar to anyone? The initials are B&W and it reads pat. pending. I bought this at an auction and just love this piece. I would really like to find out more about it. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance!

Looks like a very well thought out homemade, wire line, lake trolling reel.
Great find!

Pretty cool as Ed noted. First thing I thought of before seeing the photos is Klein. I've got a large B & M stamped Los Angeles #42 big game reel that was made by Klein. Many years ago I was told by a long gone west coast collector that they were a sporting goods store that sold high end tackle. I was also told that B & M stood for Boshen and Mercer. Can't say for sure but do believe Boshen was credited with the star drag but Mercer I couldn't say. I've burried notes so where. When you see my B & M it's 100% Klein. Klein produced some of the finest quality reels I've seen. Not to mention the alterations on other makers reels! Could you post a photo of the rear? Any drag system? Thanks for all the feedback. I do think it is a deep water troller. I think that maybe someone made a spool to replace an existing housing. Here are some more pics.

The drag is built into the front knob. The housing I believe is factory made as does the handle appear to be a well.

Hi John, I'd like to show it. I'll take pics tonight as time allows but I'm not able to post them. I'll need help. It's a 14-0 with 6 3/4" side plates and original matching B&M rod. Tight Lines Nick in NY

(I took the liberty of correcting the spelling of Klein's name in case people later do searches)

So, -Tyme! ...the line presumably feeds in and out the end, so likely should have a hollow rod? Is it a trial to attach and load line? How does it break down to use?

O.k. So with these new pictures you can see where the line feeds out/in. I do not have the rod for it. It did come with a bamboo rod someone had stuck in it (and used electrical tape to make it fit). I have not gotten to the cleaning end of it yet as I have a couple hundred ahead of it. Got to clean and sell so I can buy! The lever that I am pointing at swivels. In the position it is shown in, it prevents the reel and handle from spinning backward. It can be moved straight with the reel to allow the letting out of line without loosening the drag. Kind of like an O.C reel and some of the Pfluegers.
