Stuart Fly Reel - LW Holmes clone

Post by Ron Mc »

Hi, I picked up a Stuart fly reel from Joe's board.
This is a perfect style reel, with a exposed spool backplate and a winding plate on the face. It also appears to be a copy of the LW Holmes reel, but with bakelite spool and winding plate.
There is a large thumbscrew into the spool back that logically threads into the spindle attached to the winding plate. This thing is solid with the spindle and is aluminum (aluminum threads gall terribly in steel).

Anybody know in which direction this thumbscrew should loosten? CW or CCW? (i.e., RH or LH thread?)
(It's LH thread on Hardy and Dingley perfects).

Thanks

Ron - I saw the one you bought from Joe's. I have the same one in the same box. It unscrews counter-clock wise with a standard LH thread. You have to hold the handle side as you attempt to unscrew it - as they screw together.

Ed, now you've got me confused. I know the spool and face plate should be RH thread and will separate counter-clockwise.

The problem is the thumbscrew on the back of the spool - does this unscrew CCW or CW?
Thanks

Ron - This is how it works. The crank side has a shaft that goes through the spool. The slotted nut unscrews CCW from the shaft. The spool is squeezed in between the two. So - hold the crank side and unscrew nut CCW.

Had to laugh...

Ron: I haven't been on the board for a few days so it looks like your question was answered before I could go to my shelf, find the Stuart reel and figure out which way the screw turns. Your posting gave me a smile. The Stuart is a knock off of the L.W. Holmes reel, which is a knockoff of a Hardy Perfect. Sort of a copy of a copy of a ...
oh well. I say that as a lover of Holmes reels.
Any chance you have a Stuart box around you want to part with?
Let me know.
Thanks!
Richard
