Hi Gang,
I was wondering if anyone had any advice for storing boxes. How do you keep them from becoming brittle, etc.?
Thanks in advance,
JC

Mine are stored behind glass in old country store showcases, lawyer's bookcases, and smaller showcases.
I think the secret though to keeping them in good shape is fourfold.
1. Keeping them out of direct sunlight, or strong lights that generate uv rays and heat.
2. Avoid extremes of humidity changes. Not to damp, nor too dry, air. If you have humidity problems, ie, too wet, then a dehumidifier might be in order. If too dry, then something to add a little humidity to the air.
3. Avoid extremes of heat or cold. Just a good general room temperature, somewhere between 50 and 75 degrees.
4. Insect prevention. I keep some cedar shavings, cedar balls, in all my reel box, book cases, paper storage, and etc. Moth balls will do even better, but they sure do stink.
Handling as little as possible is a given, but it also pays to check your cases and items from time to time to check for mold, mildew, insect damage, or etc.
Another tip is to make sure the reels in the boxes are not leaking grease or oil. If you have some boxes that have absorbed oil, keep them away from other boxes.
