I found a reel in my great aunt/uncle's estate. I only know what is written on the label on the box '"Peerless" Level Winding Reel No.700 ...Bronson Reel Company Bronson, Mich.' The reel was kept in the box in a soft cloth. Apparentally it was important to someone at sometime. I'm trying to figure out why it was so important - is there more than sentimental value here?
Any info on history or value (or resources with this info) would be greatly appreciated. I have many collections, but "reels" has not been one of them.
Thanks.
Also, how would you attempt locating info on an unmarked reel. I don't have a camera right now, so I can't post a picture. All I have is the number 60 on the bottom (where the reel meets the rod) - no box, nothing but an old reel with old line - and something (mark?) apparently scratched out on the side. [Admittedly, this reel has less/no value but provides a good challenge.] (from the same estate)
Thanks again.

peerless 700
I have a note in my file that Bronson was making the Peerless model 700 in 1927.
I have one in my collection and paid twenty ($20.00) for it. I would be interested if you ever decide to sell yours. What condition is yours in?
You can email me at

Great feedback!
Thank you for your time and assistance.
I didn't figure the Peerless would be worth much - as the original owners were neither fishermen nor collectors. But the information you've provided gives me enough to assume that it was my great-grand fathers' rather than one of my great uncle's - or, at least, it was given to a great-uncle at a very early age.
I wish I had a camera, but since I'm mostly curious about history and the identification information is clearly visible on the box and the reel, I don't think the lack of photo should be a big problem. It looks like a standard old-fashioned vertical reel - like those that little kids draw when they draw a fishing rod - nothing fancy.
For kick's sake, though, the reel is a perfect specimen - shiney, works, etc - complete with box, label, etc. (If this is an area where patina is preferrable to shine, however, that is its one downfall. I think the cloth that the reel was packed in prevented patina from developing.) If a reel can be beautiful, though, it's a bute! I'm not interested in selling, however; since it is one of very few heirlooms I have from these relatives.
I think the other reel (with all the scratches) will just make its way into my tackle box. Whoever made the scratches, scratched away its collectible value; but it works like a charm!
I might even give the old line a try - just to see how it differs from what I use today.
Thanks again.
