penn reel boxes

Post by bob121349 »

Hi-when did penn reels stop using the old style picture boxes and start using the more modern ones?

Bob, you'll have to be more specific re what you are calling new vs old. They have changed numerous times. Late years were maroon or tan..
.before that, blue and white with stapled corners. Prior to that, mutlicolored yellow/green with fishing scene. And I believe the earliest was what used to be called the lighthouse box...blue and white, I think. There are several excellent Penn collectors on the board that given a clue or pic, can nail it down for you.

If i understand your question I believe it was around 1959-60 when they switched to the blue white boxes with metal corners. There are a few transitional boxes of that era with the picture front and metal corners.

Yup, the two piece boxes were used from 1933 to 1959. In those years the box color varied from Black to Green (with a few variations)and the stick on box labels varied also. In 1960 Penn moved to a one piece, flip top Blue and white box with the metal corners. They did some experimental boxes in the 1950's which were variations on the flip top boxes of the 60's done in a mix style of 1950's and 60's designs.

Wow Mike I have that same box. Would any run of the mill 25 be ok to match up with it or should i be looking for something in particular?

Here is what was in this box.

These transition boxes are late in the 1950's decade. I would not think an earlier Gray reel would be found in a box like this. This is a 1959 package.

I know this thread is quite old but this is where my question fits in. You can see the reel, you can see the box the reel came in which I believe to be 1960 and the catalog that is 1960. I had the catalog which is separate from the reel. My question, why doesn’t the catalog fit the box? I can’t imagine the reel coming without a catalog. Did I misinterpret something? Did it have a different catalog for that year or did it come without a catalog? I looked for Mike’s books and found them but since I haven’t worked or fished for close to a the almost $500 they were asking is a little too much right now. I did entertain the thought though.
I know I haven’t participated much lately, I’ve had a lot of things going on interfering with life and I really avoid computers as much as possible
Any input would be appreciated. Thanks

The transition box and reel in this thread is a 1959. Catalog 22 is a 1959 catalog, and the transition box is also 1959. I do not understand your question. The catalog fits the box perfectly.

If you are asking about the $500 price tag, I do believe that is much too much to pay for a Penn 25 simply because it is in a transition box.

Mike I think he’s saying he found your books for sale from someone for $500.

I also think he’s saying that whatever box he has, the catalog doesn’t fit.

Without pictures I can’t offer any opinion one way or another. Maybe one day, after the one millionth “I can’t figure out how to post a picture” comment, the picture posting procedure will updated to be more intuitive and easier.

You’re right about the 3 book set. They want close to $500. As usual my computer skills aren’t up to par. I tried twice to upload pictures but don’t know where they went. The box is the blue and white one with the white metal corners. It measures 3-1/4” high, 5” in length and 3-1/2” wide. Catalog is 23B and measures 8-1/4 by 5-1/2. The catalog is 1/2” wider than the box. It doesn’t fit the box when the box is empty

Uploading photos is actually quite simple. The biggest problem most people have is they don't apply the final step of inserting them into their post.

If the photos make it through the upload phase and show up on the screen the next step is to insert them into the post where one wants them to be located. When inserted one just has to decide whether to insert the thumbnail size or full size pic. Thumbnail size are usually the best because they take up less space in the post and can be enlarged for greater detail later if the viewer chooses to do so.

Don't know if this worked as it really doesn't seem to be normal. No cursor or pointing finger to pick Thumbnail with so I just clicked on it. I'm trying
