Request for info on Mohawk reel history

Post by john elder »

Dan Basore sent me the following... thoughts??

Sent from my iPhone

On this relaxed day I started to attack a cluttered table. Right away I saw a file titled ‘Sutphin’s Casting Papers’. What I “find” as its full of programs, papers and photographs.

An 8X10 with a Native American presiding over a display of reels is noted on its back with “Joe King Ocean City Introducing their Mowhawk Reel, (stamped) EXPOSITION PICTURE SERVICE INC. 101 West 41st. St. New York 18, NY WIsconsin 7-8951”.

I then went to a showcase where a Mohawk Levelwinding Casting Reel Cromium Plated with adjustable Jeweled Spool Caps in its box resides. The Reel is marked “Mohawk ABBEY & IMBRIE N.Y. U. S. A.

Please share your thoughts on these items and have a great 2018!

No thoughts about the reel showed up, but I have a gut feeling that the joyous Native American is Chief Halftown. At least his large hat is similar to Chief's. He was a Philadelphia telebabysitter for years.

For what it's worth, the box and reel shown do not belong together. The box originally housed a "Mohawk" reel produced for Sears by the Bronson Reel Co. It can be viewed on our Bronson website under "Bronson Reels Made For Sears". I have an example of that identical reel marked for Abbey & Imbrie and have been told it was produced by Ranger.

Mark is right. Sears Mohawk box, Ranger Mohawk reel. Lots written about Ranger in the Reel News.

I think, Dan, you once sent me a photo of that tournament casting Chief guy. Will have to check.

So the reel Marked Abbey & Imbrie Mohawk, was made for A
& I by Ranger? Any idea when it was produced?

There were several versions of the Mohawk made by different companies. That's why photos of your reel are so important.

I think that is Chief Needahbeh. He was Penobscot. He travelled the country giving tackle demos at fishing shows.

You decide. Seneca on left, Penobscot on right.

The only well-known Mohawk (the reel name, remember?) I can think of was Harold J. Smith, aka Tonto.
