2018 ORCA Harpers Ferry photos

Post by Mike N »

For my money, the best display at the show, Bill Hoerter’s ball handle collection. Several of the reels I have never seen in 35 years of collecting. [PS, Bill also got to ride the famed Secretariat after the horse was retired.]

ORCA royalty. Bill Gehrke, ORCA President David Lehman, past ORCA President Betty Barr, and long time ORCA treasurer Roger Schultz.

Here's a story I brought along about Perez reels and the history of his company:

The earliest Perez reels were either unlabeled or just stamped "PEREZ" on the face plate. the later reels from the Silber production era and beyond, post 1946, were larger and labeled Perez No. 1 with the logo typically seen on reels in the field.

I swore to myself I would leave the show with fewer reels than I came with...and then these rare adjustable tournament casting reels appeared.

Custom made circa. 1965 by machinist Andy Joker of Dayton, Ohio, these two tournament casting reels were priced at $X each and I gave $X for the pair.

I always wanted to add an Orvis fly reel in a fitted wooden box to my collection and, after literally smellling the wood to make sure it was pungent and not refinished, I pulled the trigger on this plated 2d model to my collection for $X cash PLUS three brass British reels in trade...

Note the label of the merchant over a second label. I’ll add a close up tomorrow.

Arley Phillips hefts a pair of tiny spinning reels.

A pair of very fine reels at Jim Ruth's table.

A well-made, homemade, unmarked spinning reel, also on Jim's table.

The casting competition and Stu Lawson Memorial Ugly Reel Toss had a rain delay, but the rain eased up to a steady mist so the troops went outside and competed. George McCabe was the overall casting contest winner.
Some of the action:

That's George McCabe in the middle of the spectators' galley.

Gary Lopez works out a minor (backlash) delay.

Dave Basore was loaded for bear.

Dave Roberts gives Betty Barr a hand tying on a casting weight.

SWEET !

That reel absolutely oozes character and quality.

Thanks to all for the pictures. I sure wish I could have been there.

One of the highlights of the weekend was getting to meet our banquet speaker, Tim O’Brien who wrote these three fantastic books (one with ORCA Charter member Ed Pritchard). Dr. O’Brien stayed after to autograph his books:
