Ernest Hemingway

Post by Mike N »

I just returned from a week’s vacation with my family in Key West and had a chance to visit the Ernest Hemingway home. I took a few cell phone photos of the tackle exhibited.

I loved that Tycoon Tackle supplied the ca. 1935 custom rod to go with ca. 1939 Pflueger Templar Model 1420-1/2 reel shown. You may recall that at our recent ORCA meet and dinner, Timothy P. O'Brien -- the son of Tycoon tackle founder Frank O'Brien, Jr. -- discussed his recent book on his dad’s company.

And of course, a direct descendant of the legendary 6-toed cats (that Hemingway felt brought him luck) was sleeping on the master bed and another wanted to get in...

Very nice, Mike! Thanks for capturing some pics to share! I see that not even Ernest was protected from the meltdown of the Pflueger plastic grasp!

Thanks for posting pics, Mike. One of these days I'm going to get there myself. Hemingway was an interesting character. Shortly after Lefty Kreh passed away I read an article about his fishing exploits with Castro and Hemingway. Not many can make that claim.

Thanks for sharing, Mike. Cool pics! That brick wall with the sign has some unique character, :beer I wonder how many twelve packs went into the making of it? :D I especially like that kitchen shot, I grew up with a stove like that. It brought back some neat memories. :D
Love those Open Face Spinning Reels! (Especially ABU & ABU/Zebco)

But the rod and reel is NOT his original outfit! A Florida collector years ago told me he sold OR donated the outfit as an example of what Ernest used for fishing in his days. There's several photos of him with Hardy reels as well as a double handle 12-0 two speed. Regardless it sets an aura of days long gone. Tight Lines Nick in NY
