I actually bought a fishing reel! I was at a flea market and was keeping my self control nicely. A couple of perfect S.B.s for five bucks each, a red 202, (did I mention I've never bought a reel before) and there's this big brass thing!
In Oklahoma?
A Four Brothers SUMCO No. 2257. It's all there. The clicker needs work and someone started to polish off the patina (and thankfully gave up), but it works.
Who is "Four Brothers"?
When were these made?
I gave twenty bucks for it, did I get taken?
Regards,
Clinton
P.S. I sure am glad I attended the "Reel Restoration" seminar at the convention this year. Now I know the proper way to remove corosion from old reels!
Four Brothers reels were made the Enterprise Mfg. Co. (Pflueger). The Sumco was made in the 20s and 30s - if memory serves. The average value for a Sumco in Very Good Condition is $20, so yours is in th right ball park.
I also love Four Brothers reels! Ron, that little Capitol is a purty one!
I have always been fond of the Rubber City casting reel. FB also reused the model name for a sea reel called the Rubber City. I never figured out why Pflueger liked to recycle their model names?
The one Four Brothers reel that I am really looking for now is the Celtic. Any leads out there?
Can anyone give me information on a Four Brothers Sumco #2257 all brass reel. It is beautiful. Most of the patina was already cleaned off of the reel when I purchased it, so I polished it up good. Cleaned it up, oiled and greased it. Maybe by the time my kids and grandkids get them they will be some patina on them. Lol. I know the history of the Four Brothers, I just can't find anything about this particular reel. I know it was made between 1927-1940. That all I can find. Any more information would be of help. Thanks in advance.
