Bought this a while ago because I think it's a cool idea, but My thoughts here are as follows:
Regarding the turbine drag system....
You would need more room and fluid in front of and behind the turbine for this to work. With the small front/rear turbine area, my thoughts are that it quickly cavitates and makes no diff past a certain point?
None of the fishing reel Engineering experts out there have any thoughts on this? It's a drag, that has a turbine submerged in oil.......
Perhaps back burner it for 50 years and repost
Well the turbine impeller is immersed in a special multi-viscosity oil that supposedly produces no inertial friction at start up and increases drag as the fish runs.
Similar designs have been around for quite a few years, since the '80s. I don't think it was overly popular or well received. It may have been more of a "new innovation" sales gimmick than anything else.
Love those Open Face Spinning Reels!(Especially ABU & ABU/Zebco)
Those were made by STH in Argentina. I have a nice one that was given to a guy named Brock Apfel as a field test. There is some connection between STH and Cortland since you see Cortland sells their cassette spool reels too.
